Turn Bold Ambitions into Real Connections

Aaron Kyle Barton is a photographer specializing in Food/Drink and Beauty/Cosmetics photography. Having built a strong foundation in Detroit, he eventually made the bold move to New York City. His aim? To take his career to the next level by working with larger clients and challenging himself in one of the most competitive markets in the world.

While his skills as a retoucher provided stability and exposure to the city’s advertising scene, Aaron knew it was time to focus fully on photography. That’s when he reached out to Wonderful Machine’s Client Introductions service, hoping to build connections and lay the groundwork for long-term marketing success.

Opening the Right Doors

Photographers often turn to our Client Introductions service when they’re looking to break into new markets or industries. Whether transitioning to a different region or targeting higher-profile clients, connecting with the right contacts is often the biggest hurdle.

The process begins with a call to understand the photographer’s goals and target markets. Based on this, I research and verify a list of potential contacts, which the photographer reviews and approves. Once finalized, I craft email copy introducing the photographer, and they compile a graphic PDF portfolio highlighting their work. This collaborative approach ensures a professional and effective email campaign aligned with their objectives.

Aaron’s Aims

Aaron’s decision to take a direct approach to marketing was a significant shift. Instead of relying on his network and industry reputation, he was now proactively reaching out to potential clients. Previously, he focused on building relationships through his role as a retoucher and letting opportunities find him. Not anymore.

One of the first things Aaron mentioned was his dream of working with a brand like Dunkin’ Donuts — something his mom would instantly recognize and take pride in seeing. Our initial call in September focused on those ambitions of landing dream clients at both the local and national levels.

Curated Campaigns

We compiled a curated list of 100 potential clients, keeping it close to home in the New York and New Jersey areas. The list was split evenly between Aaron’s two specialties (Food/Drink and Beauty/Cosmetics), with further distinctions between national and local companies. This dual focus allowed us to prepare specific outreach campaigns for each industry, ensuring his work resonated with the needs and aesthetic preferences of different clients.

In our conversations, we focused on how his images capture depth, evoke a strong sense of presence, and make a statement through vivid textures and intricate details. These attributes were central to the messaging, as they conveyed not just technical skill, but a unique artistic vision. We collaborated to build a portfolio that highlighted his most compelling projects, showcasing his versatility across food, beverage, and cosmetics.

The email outreach followed a structured approach: an initial message to each contact accompanied by the PDF portfolio, followed by a second email about ten days later. The follow-up kept Aaron’s work top-of-mind for busy creatives while gathering feedback to determine if it aligned with their vision, budget, or schedule.

Impact Delivered

The campaign concluded in December and achieved a 60% open rate, a remarkable outcome in such a competitive market. Aaron received positive responses across both submarkets. A marketing lead at a local digital agriculture company expressed interest in future collaborations, while a producer at a prominent olive oil brand said they’d keep Aaron in mind for upcoming projects. Meanwhile, the creative director of a cosmetics company complimented his work, noting that although their photography had recently moved in-house, they were impressed by his portfolio.

And then came the unexpected. A prospective client at an organic grain pasta brand, who opened the initial email five times without responding, recently circled back to book Aaron for a project. Even without an immediate reply, his work clearly left a lasting impression. When trying to make a splash in an oversaturated market, we learned that success lies in the harmony between image selection and copy. The right visuals paired with thoughtful, targeted messaging, create a powerful combination that speaks directly to potential clients. On that note, there was one critical piece we had to adjust.

We noticed that Aaron’s branding wasn’t as consistent as it could have been, which led us to refine and establish a cohesive identity for “Aaron Kyle Barton,” not “Aaron Barton.” Brand consistency is key to making a lasting impression, so we focused on aligning his messaging, visuals, and overall presentation. My recommendation to Aaron was that when building a digital promo, it should feel like a page pulled right from his website —much like a tearsheet— ensuring that potential clients experience a strong, unified brand across all touchpoints.

The Story Continues

Aaron and I immediately clicked. I had seen and loved his work before and was excited to meet the master behind the craft. This connection made the process feel natural and easy, allowing us to align with his goals and approach with genuine enthusiasm. From our first meeting, it was clear he had both the talent and the drive to succeed. The Client Introductions service gave him a structured and targeted manner to connect with clients, helping him take those crucial first steps in New York City.

He’s already signed on for another six-month service. With this next phase, we’ll continue to build on the momentum, reaching even more clients and exploring new opportunities to grow his career. It’s exciting to see him embrace this ongoing process, knowing it will open even more doors in the future.
